The Lester & Charlie Review

There are a lot of things to remember and reflect upon during the anniversary of September, 11. And plenty of people will be telling their stories of grief, rage, human kindness and patriotism. So, Lester & Charlie are going to focus on someone who might get overlooked: Leo Cullum.

Leo Cullum, who died about three years ago, was a TWA pilot and a cartoonist for The New Yorker. And Leo turned out to be the person who answered  the unspoken question that was on everyone’s mind following the attacks: When will be OK to laugh again?

It might not sound that important, but back then, there was a feeling that terrorists not only took away our skyline and businesses and families, but that maybe they had stolen what Americans always rely on to survive a crisis: our sense of humor.

So, he published this:

Book review: Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War

war

Book of words

This is my first political biography in years since this genre is particularly my cup of tea but I was sold by the following two points:

(1) Insights into Iraq and Afghanistan wars – Having watched both wars from afar and hearing so much from the media, what better than hearing from the ex-secretary of defense himself.
(2) Robert Gates unique position – Not only did he helm two wars but he was also the only secretary of defense who served two consecutive presidents from opposing parties (George W Bush’s last two years and Barack Obama’s first two years).

“Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War” by former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates though was a dense read that took awhile for me to get through, it was overall, an enjoyable and juicy read, almost like going through an exposé that dishes the dirt inside the White House…

New York Cliché

I was a plus one at a wedding this past weekend. Let me impart the wisdom of what I learned NOT to do if you want to be a good wedding date!

1. Over pack

Keep it to one carry-on if at all possible.

2. Wait until you’re on the plane to reveal your fear of flying

If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all (unless your date brings it up first).

7. Wax poetically about your dream wedding
